RESOLVING FREQUENT INSTALLATION CHALLENGES WITH BABY GATES
CRUCIAL INSTALLATION WARNING
Successful installations require a significant degree of skill; attempting this without professional assistance could lead to potential hazards and increased expenses.
By reading this article, you acknowledge that you have reviewed and accepted the terms outlined here: Website Terms & Conditions.
The examples below depict various installation challenges I have encountered, which may resonate with your experiences and offer practical solutions.
INSTALLATION ISSUE 1: UNEVEN GROUND
ADDRESSING THE ISSUE OF UNEVEN GROUND

-
- Measure the widest point at the top to determine the required size for the gate and any extensions needed. (CLICK HERE FOR MEASURING GUIDELINES).
- Once you have the gates/extensions, use an angle grinder equipped with a metal/aluminium disc to accurately cut the gate, following the measurements indicated in the reference images above.
- Remove the plastic component from the section you intend to cut out and insert it into the trimmed part of the gate to ensure a proper fit for the tension knob.
- This process will become clearer once you have the gate at hand.
INSTALLATION ISSUE 2: MOUNTING ON AN ANGLED WALL
OVERCOMING THE CHALLENGE OF MOUNTING ON AN ANGLED WALL

-
- Make sure that the gate/extensions are ready for installation.
- Use Pratley Putty Quickset to fill any gaps and create a level surface on the wall.
- Allow the Putty to cure completely BEFORE tightening the tension knobs to securely attach the gate using pressure.
- Avoid relying on the gate for safety until all procedures are finished and the gate has been tested for stability.
INSTALLATION ISSUE 3: OUTDOOR INSTALLATION OF BABY GATES
CONFRONTING THE CHALLENGE OF INSTALLING A BABY GATE OUTDOORS
While setting up baby gates outdoors can be a quick and budget-friendly option, it may also void the warranties associated with these gates.

I recommend considering outdoor installations of baby gates as a temporary and economical solution. This could risk voiding your warranty on the gates.
-
- Baby gates are specifically designed for indoor use and are not suitable for outdoor conditions due to potential weather-related damage.
- This limitation is explicitly stated in the warranty documentation that accompanies the product.
- Failure to adhere to warranty stipulations will result in the forfeiture of warranty coverage.
For a durable solution, consider employing a contractor who specializes in security or latch gates. While this may entail higher costs, it is the most effective option.
PREPARING THE BABY GATE AND EXTENSIONS FOR OUTDOOR USE:
Disclaimer: None of these precautions guarantee complete rust protection; however, they aim to extend the lifespan of the gate in South African weather conditions.
Regular maintenance every 1-2 months can significantly reduce the risk of rust.
To minimise rust and moisture accumulation, adhere to the following guidelines:
-
- Before installation, treat the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit, ensuring to cover the base areas thoroughly.
- Drill holes at the bottom of the gate using an 8mm steel drill bit. This will allow water to drain and prevent rust from forming inside the hollow sections of the gate, where moisture may accumulate at joints, connectors, and tension knobs. The holes will provide ventilation to avert moisture build-up.
- Apply a light coating of Rustoleum Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover – Satin Clear 340g, available at takealot.com, to the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit.
- Allow to dry completely (approximately 2 hours), then apply a second coat.
For existing rust:
-
- Spray the affected areas with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer 291g, following the product guidelines.
- Refer to the product description on takealot.com; you may need to acquire mineral spirits to clean any overspray on non-rusted areas.
- The rust reformer will convert rust to a black colour, which should then be coated with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel Gloss White 340g, available on takealot.com.
