Addressing Water Ingress Challenges in Shellharbour
A homeowner in Shellharbour encountered a severe and worsening problem with water ingress. Rainwater from two adjacent properties, elevated above the home, began to flow into the garden and seep beneath the foundation. This unwanted intrusion caused damage to the flooring, promoted rising damp, and resulted in mould growth within the property, jeopardising the integrity of recent renovations.

How Can You Detect the Source of Water Ingress?
The issue originated from both surface runoff and subsurface water migrating downhill from the back and side yards of neighbouring properties. Without a reliable drainage system to intercept this influx, the water was forced to flow beneath the house.
Designing an Effective Drainage System
CS Plumbing developed and implemented a gravity-fed French drain system specifically engineered to capture and redirect water before it could infiltrate the home’s foundation.
The project encompassed several critical features:
- A French drain system expertly designed to gather surface and subsurface water from neighbouring properties, directing it through gravity to a concrete pit.
- A 100mm PVC pipe extending from the pit to the curb, featuring strategically drilled holes in the curb for effective discharge.
- Three new, larger-diameter Colorbond metal downpipes that replaced the original smaller pipes, connected to new 100mm PVC piping leading to the curb.
- A robust retaining wall system constructed along the boundary, employing concrete sleepers and galvanised steel posts, with auger holes drilled using an excavator to form a solid barrier against the neighbouring yard.
- Efficient soil removal on-site, facilitated by a dumper for streamlined site management.
What Actions Can You Undertake for Effective Water Management?
The newly installed drainage system now efficiently captures both surface and subsurface water at the property boundary, ensuring it is redirected away from the home. This solution offers the homeowner a durable, low-maintenance option that protects their foundation, flooring, and the investment made in renovations.
